Bending Technology to Revolutionize Industries

If there’s one thing that Raj Vadavia has proven time and time again, it would be that out-of-the-box thinking coupled with adaptive, dynamic system design can lead to vastly improved, evergreen software solutions. Indeed, this has been the trademark of Raj’s 30-year career – software applications that can evolve over time without requiring constant source code rewrites.

Furthermore, Raj’s keen understanding of core challenges, his ability to foresee obstacles, and his talent for finding a direct path to solutions have all helped to give him a significant edge — an edge which he gladly passes on to the companies and organizations that he works with.

"... out-of-the-box thinking coupled with adaptive, dynamic system design can lead to vastly improved, evergreen software solutions."

Whether it was using a unique LISP-AutoCAD hybrid to create simulations for the Canadian Space Agency, thereby saving significant training time for astronauts, or using LAX & YCC compiler parsing tools to help both the US Patent Office and the Korean Patent Office solve unstructured text parsing, Raj has always brought a unique perspective to finding the right solution.

Well before Netflix came onto the scene, Raj designed and patented a video-on-demand technology to solve the problem of streaming video – and even earlier still, he developed an iTunes-like online music service before Apple created iTunes. Today, VR is a hot “new” field – yet Raj was already a pioneer in VR development by the mid-1990’s. You could say that Raj has spent most of his career ahead of the curve, and also ahead of the times.

Raj’s expertise can further be seen in transforming numerous companies. For NeuroTracker (a 3D visual exercise system that trains the brain and strengthens users’ mental muscles so that they can reach their true potential), Raj directed the development of a completely new back-end and middleware layer to allow for the rapid deployment of customized solutions, tailored to any market and any target audience. This capability allowed NeuroTracker to support and branch out into extremely diverse markets such as education, military, and sports.

Another example is that of Coencorp (a leading innovator of automated fleet & fuel management solutions), where Raj introduced dynamic data-driven views, interactive dynamic dashboards, GPS tracking integration, and web services for extracting and managing data — which customers are able to create themselves thanks to the way the system works. Raj also introduced BI (Business Insight) technology and BI-driven dashboards in order to provide predictive analysis, making Coencorp the first to offer such a solution in the fleet management market.

As if all of that was not enough, Raj is the core architect of his own long-standing patented technology called EVOLUTION, a nosql-like data management solution that he started developing in 1998-1999 – and which is still completely viable today. It took the rest of the industry over a decade to even start to address the issues of dealing with the rigidity of RDBMS based systems in the light of ever-changing business requirements. In this context, it is all too common to require constant rewrites of software source code, often very large portions of that code, in any large or enterprise level system. EVOLUTION solved that problem as far back as 2001.

“... it is all too common to require constant rewrites of software source code, often very large portions of that code, in any large or enterprise level system.”

Another aspect of Raj’s success is his ability with team building. According to the pioneering CTO, it is very difficult to change with fast-moving trends so the only way forward is to know one’s own core strength, as well as the strengths of others, and build the right team for each unique situation or job. Whether it is shoring up an existing team, or assembling teams from the ground up, Raj makes it a priority to get the right people into the right positions. Raj is a “people person” and it shows in the teams that he has helped to build.

Raj’s advice to younger CTO hopefuls? “The journey to becoming a CTO is a long road with both failures and successes, but if one is adaptive to change and humble when they have reached the destination, that is where true success lies.”

Today, the world is moving into an analytical age with the increased ability to collect big data, process deeper analyses, and accurately model (or even predict) real-world outcomes. “To be a part of that, we are integrating Business insight (BI), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and GPS tracking & mapping into many of our core solutions,” says Raj. The key is intelligent integration, and if Raj’s past experience is any indicator, then hybrid solutions are the way to go.

For Raj, these are the key technologies to look to in 2020 and the years to come — IoT, IP6, BI, AI, and ML, which together will transform the future. “If you think that the world is connected now, in the near future it will be connected in even more ways and more dimensions, and we will have lightning speed access to all that data,” says Raj. “What was shown in the movie Minority Report regarding the analytical power of solving events, will become a reality within the next decade.”

Raj continues to make himself available to startups and established companies alike.
